Description

The Haskell Foundation is a non-profit (US 501(c)(3)) software foundation which seeks to promote and support the use of the Haskell programming language. Haskell is a highly influential, purely functional programming language. It has had unusual longevity for a programming language without a core corporate sponsor, and has a small but strong community of industrial, academic, and hobbyist users. The Foundation believes that there are significant opportunities for Haskell to be used more widely, if its existing community structures are supported properly.

The Foundation currently has income of low six figures, primarily from corporate sponsors, and uses the funds to promote its technical agenda, support community infrastructure, and run events. Previously the Foundation has employed an Executive Director who has taken on both fundraising and leadership duties. We now wish to employ a fundraiser who can truly excel at raising funds, without having to split their time and skills.

The Head of Development will report to the board. The Foundation has a strong board who will be taking on leadership duties for the time being, and will support the Head of Development with providing warm introductions, preparing materials, attending meetings with sponsors, and strategic guidance. The Foundation may employ an Executive Director again in the future, in which case the Head of Development would report to the Executive Director.

The Foundation is open to part-time applicants, as well as applicants who have a different vision for the role, so long as that would achieve the Foundation’s goals. This role is open to applicants from any country, although most of the Foundation’s existing sponsors are in Europe/America, so candidates in compatible time zones will be preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own the fundraising process: strategy, lead generation, cultivation, proposals, negotiation, close, and stewardship.
  • Grow and retain corporate sponsors, and move towards multi-year commitments.
  • Diversify funding sources beyond corporate sponsors to include grants if appropriate.
  • Develop the Foundation’s value proposition and sponsorship materials in collaboration with the board.
  • Create a lightweight but sustainable fundraising support system: CRM, reporting, donor communications, etc.
  • Advise and equip board members to assist fundraising.

What Success Looks Like (Full-Time)

  • 3 months: updated sponsorship package + value proposition; CRM/pipeline process running; meetings with existing sponsors.
  • 6 months: $500k pipeline; 8+ sponsor meetings/month.
  • 12 months: $200k new/renewed commitments; net revenue retention ≥100%; at least one additional major sponsor.

Requirements

  • Several years experience in fundraising, partnerships, or enterprise B2B sales.
  • Demonstrable track record closing large deals (e.g., $100k+/yr sponsorships or equivalent scale) and retaining accounts.
  • Strong writing abilities.
  • Comfortable operating independently.
  • Willing to learn about Haskell enough to become a confident advocate; knowing Haskell is not a requirement!

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience fundraising in open-source, standards, developer ecosystems, or similar “public good” areas.
  • Experience selling to engineering-led orgs.
  • Familiarity with US charity fundraising governance expectations.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary, plus an annual performance bonus based on agreed objectives (not commission-based).
